Preserving Oocytes, Ovarian Tissue & Embryos

Many people consider fertility preservation before undergoing cancer treatments or military deployment. Some wish to postpone childbearing for medical or personal reasons. There are a few different options of fertility preservation, although the timing is usually the main factor that determines the method.

The most widely used and trusted method of fertility preservation is embryo cryopreservation. Oocyte (egg) cryopreservation has also rapidly increased due in part to recent data and success rates. The American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) lifted the experimental label from oocyte cryopreservation in late 2012.

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is offered at several clinics in the U.S. This procedure can be quickly performed by a reproductive endocrinologist and does not delay chemotherapy. Ovarian tissue cryostorage is the main fertility preservation option for prepubescent girls to freeze ovarian tissue before cancer treatments. ASRM lifted the experimental label for ovarian tissue cryopreservation in 2019.
